Gender, Genocide and Justice in Rwanda

In this event, Drs. Roxanne Krystalli, Sara E. Brown, and Samantha Lakin conclude the series by applying a gendered lens to the events of the Rwandan genocide and issues of reparations and political representation in post-genocide Rwanda. Dr. Krystalli is Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at the University of St. Andrews School of International Relations and has served as an advisor and consultant on issues related to gender and conflict for various UN agencies and international organizations. Dr. Brown is the Regional Director of the American Jewish Committee's San Diego office and former Executive Director of Chhange, the Center for Holocaust, Human Rights & Genocide Education. Dr. Lakin is a research specialist with more than 10 years of experience working internationally on issues of transitional justice, atrocity prevention, and human security and conducted research on the memorialization of genocide in Rwanda.

Speaker Bios

Dr. Sara E. Brown is Regional Director of the American Jewish Committee's San Diego office. Dr. Brown holds a Ph.D. in comparative genocide studies from the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University in Worcester, Mass. She was the Executive Director of the Center for Holocaust, Human Rights & Genocide Education, and managed post-secondary education programming for USC Shoah Foundation. She is the author of Gender and the Genocide in Rwanda: Women as Perpetrators and Rescuers and the co-editor of the Routledge Handbook on Religion, Mass Atrocity, and Genocide. Brown has also worked at the Interdisciplinary Center in Israel, conducted genocide-related research in Rwanda, served as a project coordinator in refugee camps in Tanzania, and consulted for several organizations, including the United Nations, Aegis Trust, and Common Circles.

Dr. Roxanne Krystalli is Lecturer (Assistant Professor) at the University of St. Andrews School of International Relations. Her research and teaching focus on feminist peace and conflict studies, as well as on the politics of nature and place. For over a decade, she has worked at the intersection of gender and peacebuilding as an academic researcher and humanitarian practitioner. Dr. Krystalli has partnered with a variety of organizations, including Oxfam GB, Mercy Corps, the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Feinstein International Center, the Folke Bernadotte Academy, Beyond Borders, and more, to shed light on the experiences of conflict-affected communities. She regularly advises international organizations and NGOs on gender, justice, and peacebuilding.

Dr. Samantha Lakin is a research specialist with more than 10 years of experience working internationally on issues of transitional justice, atrocity prevention, and human security. She holds a Ph.D. from the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University, and a M.A. in Law and Diplomacy from The Fletcher School at Tufts University. Her dissertation focuses on memory and justice in the aftermath of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. She has led research and policy teams in Rwanda, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, and Uganda, with organizations including the Kigali Genocide Memorial, Search for Common Ground, Inclusive Security, and the American University of Iraq, Sulimani. Her research focuses on access to justice in post-conflict settings, with specific knowledge and experience working in Rwanda and the Great Lakes Region of Africa.
