Gendercide: Inclusivity in the Study of Gender, Mass Violence and Genocide

In this event, Dr. Adam Jones introduced the concept of gendercide, which refers to gender-selective mass killings. Using a historical case-study method, he shows how gendercide has historically targeted non-combatant men. Dr. Jones is Professor of Political Science at the University of British Columbia and the author of Gender Inclusive: Essays on Violence, Men and Feminist International Relations and more than a dozen other books on genocide. He was recently cited as one of Fifty Key Thinkers on the Holocaust and Genocide.

Speaker Bio

Dr. Adam Jones is Professor of Political Science at the University of British Columbia in Kelowna, Canada. He is the author of Gender Inclusive: Essays on Violence, Men, and Feminist International Relations (2009), and the author or editor of over a dozen other books, including Genocide: A Comprehensive Introduction (3rd edition; 2016) and The Scourge of Genocide: Essays and Reflections (2013). He was recently cited as one of Fifty Key Thinkers on the Holocaust and Genocide for the book project of that title (2010). Jones has worked as an expert consultant with the United Nations Office of the Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide. He is also the co-founder and executive director of Gendercide Watch (www.gendercide.org), a Web-based educational initiative that confronts gender-selective atrocities against men and women worldwide.
