Black History Month: Black Resistance: Database Articles

We detail the long tradition of black social movements, especially black feminist organizing, against systemic racial oppression. In doing so, we intend to contribute social movement theorizing that more fully considers powerful counterframed perspectives of black activists in U.S. social movements.

This paper investigates the role of women in anti‐racist campaigns against policing in post‐2011 England. It argues that imperial discourses about gender norms and respectability have helped to shape how race and crime are constituted in the contemporary period.

Each resistance movement is equipped to address the oppression of its time. In this moment, #BlackLivesMatter (BLM) has risen as a national and international social movement, thriving through social media, to resist the oppression of Black people. BLM surfaced when activist Alicia Garza used social media to rally a cry that #BLM after George Zimmerman was acquitted of the murder of unarmed Black teen, Trayvon Martin, on 13 July 2013 .

The author examines the nonviolent, passive-resistance movement as an expression of civility in pursuit of justice as accorded by the Constitution and in the expressed value system of the American society.

The article discusses the author's theoretical understanding of abolition, reparations, and histories of injustices in America and other places as of 2019, and it mentions challenges in Black communities in the U.S., as well as information about abolitionists, political power, and transformative justice. According to the article, abolition calls in individuals to destabilize, deconstruct, and repair historical harms. Social movements, slavery, and racism in the U.S. are addressed.

Black girls in the U.S. experience high levels of discrimination and adversity. Resilience is a term used within social work, psychology, and health professions to indicate positive adaptation to adversity, trauma, or stress. This article examines traditional and alternative models of resilience through analyses of quantitative and qualitative data from an evaluation of a year-long empowerment program for 33 Black girls (mean age = 14.97 years).

On December 25 2016, the film Hidden Figures made its debut in select theaters across the country. I argue that analyzing the film in light of the book offers insights about Black women’s legacy of struggle, particularly the leadership styles they routinely utilized to challenge racism and disrupt the gender status quo, which would otherwise be obscured.

I focus on interviews and press conferences between 2014 and 2016 with police shooting mourners Esaw Garner, Lesley McSpadden, Samaria Rice, Audrey DuBose, and Valerie Castile. I show how these Black women resist racist calls to deprive them of their anger and right to seek justice, refusing to suture the social crisis of police violence with their emotional labor.

Scholars have begun to address how exposure to vicarious racial violence influences stress and coping processes among Black families in the U.S. Yet, fewer scholars have considered the importance of racial grief as a component of the coping process. The current study drew upon semi-structured interview data from 31 Black mothers in the U.S. (25–52 years; Mage = 35 years) to explore how mothers processed and responded to vicarious anti-Black racial violence.

The article focuses on the use of the street lamp technology and its contribution to forms of racial visibility in the U.S. Topics discussed include a shooting incident at the town of Brownsville, Texas on August 13, 1906, the link between gas light, criminality and policing, lynching of African American citizens to electric light poles, and street lamp destruction by African American people as resistance to violence brought by the street lamp technology.

Drawing from social epidemiology literature on structural racism, and rooted in critical race theory and critical theory related to narrative power, this paper uses satire and humor as commentary on mainstream U.S. public health discourse related to the role of “race” (properly understood, racism) in shaping inequities observed via COVID-19.
