Information Literacy Instruction Information for Faculty: Home

Request Information Literacy Class Instruction

Faculty are highly encouraged to schedule an information literacy class for their students. These classes will be planned around individual class objectives and assignments.

During the library instruction session, librarians will show your students how to navigate library resources so that they can successfully complete assignments such as research papers, speeches, and other projects.

Skills discussed include searching online databases, evaluating internet sources, and/or addressing plagiarism.

To schedule, submit a Information Literacy Instruction Request form

Information Literacy Services

Information literacy can be delivered to students in a variety of manners:

Course-Related Instruction Session – The librarian will meet with the class or students for a single session aimed at assisting with a research assignment. The content and educational materials will be agreed upon by both the faculty and the librarian.

Library Liaisons – Each academic department at QCC has been assigned a Library Liaison, who will act as the primary contact for the department regarding the Library's resources and services. LINK

Embedded Librarian - librarian meets with classes or students several times during the semester to support research and writing-intensive courses. Faculty and librarians work together to set content and learning goals.

Reference Services – Point-of-need help can be found through the Library’s in-person, phone, email or chat reference services.

Information Literacy at QCC

Information Literacy, defined by the ALA, involves discovering, accessing, assessing, and applying information. It extends beyond collaboration between librarians and faculty, encompassing skills like formulating research questions and understanding ethical implications.

Students must develop these competencies to navigate abundant and often unreliable information from sources like Google and social media. This requires a campus culture that prioritizes collaboration and emphasizes student learning.

The QCC Library’s IL Instruction program's mission is to align with the Queensborough Community College’s General Education Outcomes and collaborate with classroom faculty to equip QCC students with essential information management skills essential for academic research and lifelong learning.
