 This presentation will be a community dialogue on the issues of gender-based violence sparked by the growing #MeToo movement that has swept the nation with the revelations about sexual harassment by celebrities, politicians and other powerful people that has fueled the national dialogue about violence against women.

Based on the book by Margot Lee Shetterly, this Oscar-nominated film shares the untold and remarkable true story of the African-American women who worked as mathematicians, engineers, and computer scientists at NASA and whose work was vital to the early years of the U.S. Space program Time: 12:10-2:20 p.m.

  • The Empowered Voter: Women's Activism & Modern Day Barriers - NYPIRG  (C. Hughes /R.Ford)

Voting is a fundamental right that many of us take for granted, but it hasn't always been that way. Come join the discussion on how the New York State voting process as we know it came to be through women's activism and how it continues to play a role in shaping voter empowerment.  Learn and brainstorm ways for you to take advantage of the rights you have and improve the system for those who don't!

  • Women Leaders Panel (R.Ford)

A panel of women in leadership positions at QCC will discuss their careers and how they have succeeded in male dominated fields.

  • Autobiography Panel

A student panel will present personal narratives describing how specific life experiences have shaped their current belief systems, much like Sotomayor’s social, economic, and personal history has shaped her judicial perspectives. After student presentations, there will be a Q&A with the audience.

  • Memoir Workshop (R. Ford, A. Cercone)

This hands-on workshop will give students a chance to express themselves and find a voice so that they can create their own memoir. Using Sotomayor as our inspiration, we will find moments in our lives that will provide a starting point with which to write.

  • Exploring Vulnerability as Strength

In My Beloved World, Sotomayor explains that while she understood the importance of self-reliance and hard work early in life, it was much later that she “came to recognize the value of vulnerability and to honor it” (359).  This guided discussion explores Brené Brown’s research on vulnerability and its power to connect people to themselves and others.

  • Being Bilingual (J.Maloy)

Students and faculty will discuss being bilingual through interactive writing exercises and storytelling. We will share our own experiences, read works by bilingual authors, and discuss Sonia Sotomayor's childhood in order to explore how being bilingual shapes a person's identity.

  • Themes of Feminism in Music: Our Song Is Drawn from Us  (S. Dahlke),

In this interactive event, singers from choral classes will use the song “Flight” to demonstrate for participants how music listening and performance can viscerally illuminate concepts from the book. The singers and participants will learn and experience "Flight" together, and through group singing will experience kinesthetically and communally Sotomayor's message of empowerment.

In the spirit and vitality of Puerto Rico and the Bronx, NYC poets read work inspired by Sonia Sotomayor and her lasting legacy.

  • Temple Grandin Screening

(A. Ridinger-Dotterman)

In my Beloved World, Sotomayor explains that growing up with the disability of diabetes was challenging, but helped her to cultivate the strengths of self-discipline and self-reliance.  While disabilities are often thought of as disadvantages or challenges, living with a disability also can enable valuable abilities or perspectives.  The biopic Temple Grandin explores the ways that disability enabled Grandin to break new ground in the science of animal husbandry.

Soon to be CUNY Law School grad (2018)  Kirsten Tamayo will talk student-to-student, giving the real scoop on law school and what you can do with a law degree.
